The California English Language Development Test (CELDT)  is administered to students in grades Kindergarten through twelve whose home language is not English.

 

The CELDT consists of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking assessments that help to determine a student’s proficiency with the English language.

 

An INITIAL CELDT assessment is given to any student whose home language is not English and has not previously taken the CELDT.

 

An ANNUAL CELDT assessment is given to any student whose home language is not English and maintains an English Language Status of “English Learner”.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE STATUSES

·      English Only (EO) is assigned to students whose home language is English

·      Initially Fluent English Proficient (IFEP) is assigned to students whose home language is not English but have demonstrated proficiency with the English language through their Initial CELDT assessment

·      English Learner (EL) is assigned to students whose home language is not English and have not yet demonstrated proficiency with the English language.

·      Reclassified English Fluent Proficient (RFEP) is assigned to students whose home language is not English and were previously classified as EL, but have since demonstrated proficiency with the English language.
